New Rockall Times articles

I’ve got a couple more articles in the North Atlantic’s favourite newspaper. UK Government scoops top international award and Government foils new wave of al-Qaeda terror attacks

Some new photos

I’ve added a couple of new B3ta photos to my photo page. My particular favourite:

Tony was enjoying his holiday in New York so much, he never saw it coming

Swedish translation!

It’s strange but it’s true. I’ve just discovered out of the blue that the article I wrote for the Rockall Times on car branding:

http://www.therockalltimes.co.uk/2004/02/23/car-branding.html

has been translated into Swedish and stuck on a Swedish website! Here it is:

http://www.yttermera.se/lackochratt/pages/kvinnor_ny_malgrupp.html

And if you don’t believe me, you can paste that address into this translator:

http://www.systransoft.com/

and see the page translated into English. What an odd business. Still, as they say, international translation is the most sincere form of flattery…

More movies

This time it’s from a 34 km ride, so is somewhat more interesting. The ride went out on one valley, over a ridge and then back along another valley. It’s fun to watch the action slow down and the clouds start to scud across the sky as I climb the long hill. Watch it from my cycling movies page.

Something would be wrong if I didn’t mention this

You just have to do this. Download my Life Calculator (it’s an Excel file). It only takes a minute to use, but the results are likely to change your life. Seriously. It really made me think…

Movies go to the next level!

After many hours of fiddling with very small screws and a vicious soldering iron, I’ve hacked a digital camera from eBay to do time-lapse photography and then stuck it on my bike. Here’s my first proper attempt at recording a ride, a 27-minute ride around Salisbury reduced to 13 seconds, which I think works out at a speed of 1300 kilometres per hour!

An experiment in film-making!

This film was an experiment. Amazingly, it was shot using a Nokia phone at Salisbury station taking pictures as fast as I could and then stuck together using Quicktime. Enjoy!

Two short stories in the latest Rockall Times. Mine are the first and last stories on this page, the ones about musicals and genies.

Possibly the funniest eBay item ever. It’s up for sale again if anyone wants it.

Chernobyl

If you haven’t seen this, you really have to read it. It’s a website from a Russian motorcyclist called Elena. She has the most amazing, sobering photographs from a visit to Chernobyl. Read it here

Gone to Nottingham

I’m off to speak at the International Conference on Traffic and Transport Psychology in Nottingham. Why Nottingham is quite so difficult to reach by train is a mystery I hope to solve while I’m there. Watch this space…

Mobile blogging

This is really just here as a test, so you will probably want to ignore it. Or, you might be interested to learn that I wrote and posted this message from a palmtop computer, which is quite neat…

Left-handed stone throwing

The brainchild of Rick Barton, who insisted that if adults threw stones hard with their wrong hands, they became five-year-olds again. Was he right? We have the video analysis right here

Website revamp

Yes, I know: you’ve just picked yourself up off the floor having slipped from your chair in shock at the professional appearance of the pages before you. All I can do is apologise and hope that now you’ve recovered from the shock, you enjoy the new slick look of this site.

Remember: New look - same great taste!

A big shout-out here to John Gruber, whose SmartyPants software is responsible for taking my simple text files and formatting them with “curly quotes” and nice curly apostrophes in words like “it’s”. Nice!

Fame at last!

South African travel writer Rich Shapiro wrote a chapter of his next book about Sarah and me after we met him at the World Wife-Carrying Championships in Finland last month. He’s still travelling, but he’s updating his writing as he goes and you can read our chapter here!
